Are Mainers prudes when it comes to sex — or have we lightened up?

Twenty years ago, the news that a sex shop, Pandora’s Boxxx, was to open in south Brewer was met with outrage. Angry residents signed a petition demanding it move out of the neighborhood, there were two separate protests , a lawsuit was filed and Brewer ultimately adopted an ordinance about adult entertainment businesses.

This week, the news that Adam & Eve,  a national chain of stores selling sex toys and other adult products, will open on Broadway in Bangor later this year was met, for the most part, with approval or shrugs. Commenters on the BDN website and on social media hailed the arrival of a new business in Bangor, and one that’s sex-positive to boot. In other words: it’s not a big deal.

It’s a long way from the outcry of previous decades. In fact, today, public opinion has shifted dramatically from the era when adult businesses and sexually explicit material were either not talked about, viewed as morally reprehensible, or were actively opposed by many in the community. Today, it’s just another type of business, same as any other.

It wasn’t that long ago that the city of Bangor was embroiled in a long-running battle with Diva’s Gentleman’s Club, a strip club who’s owner, Diane Cormier, fought to allow her employees to dance nude while also serving alcohol. That legal wrangling started in the mid-1990s, went all the way to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court  in 2003, and didn’t fully end until Cormier was evicted from her building in 2011.

By comparison, when Dave’s Romantic Supermart — a.k.a “Dirty Dave’s,” a Bangor sex shop — closed this summer,  many actually mourned its loss as a part of Bangor pop culture.

Sandra Caron,  professor of family relations and human sexuality at the University of Maine, said that such a shift in public attitude doesn’t surprise her. As society has slowly relaxed its views on sexuality, much of the industry that has grown up around sex has matured.

“More than half of women own a vibrator, and 30 percent of those women use it with a partner. At this point, it’s pretty mainstream,” Caron said. “People view these sorts of things as part of wellness. Sexual wellness is a big part of overall wellness.”

Kraig McGee, a co-owner of the new Adam & Eve location, said the Bangor shop will only sell devices, accessories and other personal items, and won’t sell pornography or other explicit material. Its interior looks more like a higher-end boutique than the way sex shops may have appeared in the past — cluttered, in run-down buildings, with a seedy atmosphere.

Caron said such shops often tended to cater toward men, mostly straight, who came in to buy “dirty” magazines, books and videos. For many, there was an element of shame involved in going inside.

“It’s really a positive development that today, stores like this are not only open to women — they cater to them directly,” Caron said. “Women should be able to walk into a shop like this and know that it’s for them, and that they are entitled to sexual pleasure just as much as men.”

Prior to the 1970s, sex shops, strip clubs and adult movie theaters essentially did not exist in eastern Maine. Those businesses that dared sell adult content could get in big trouble, as evidenced by a 1963 obscenity trial in Bangor against an Exchange Street store that got busted selling “lewd” books and magazines.

With the dawn of the “free love” era in the late 1960s, the floodgates opened. In the 1970s, drive-in movie theaters regularly showed X-rated movies, including those in Bangor, Detroit, Enfield and Trenton. Bangor had its own X-rated indoor cinema, the Westgate Cinema, located where the Northern Light Health Care Mall on Union Street is today. The first-ever public “exotic dancing” establishments in the Bangor area opened around that time, including the short-lived Shamrock Club in Orono , and burlesque dancers at the Bangor House hotel.

Still, though, such places were rare, often located on the outskirts of town or out in the boonies, and were almost always met with some form of resistance by local communities. In 1990, one of the few strip clubs in eastern Maine was La Casa de Fiesta  — located in a nondescript building along Route 11 in the unorganized territory of Dolby, near Millinocket. Residents of Millinocket and East Millinocket alike were not happy about it, and fought the Penobscot County Commission against allowing it to remain open.

Flash forward to 2023. Women take pole dancing and burlesque classes  for fun and for fitness. You can buy sex toys at Walmart. Sexually explicit songs from artists like Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have conquered popular culture. While it remains as complicated and mysterious as ever, if there’s one thing that’s changed in recent years when it comes to sex, it’s that people are way less afraid of it.

“Sex isn’t dirty or shameful. I think we, as a society, are starting to come around to that,” Caron said. “More education and more awareness about these sorts of things is always a good thing, instead of hiding it away or making it seem like it’s taboo.”

Here's what we know about Jim Jordan and the Ohio State University wrestling scandal

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio could become the next speaker of the House, and questions are resurfacing about his role in a sexual-abuse scandal at Ohio State University.

Former wrestlers have accused Jordan of turning a blind eye toward sexual abuse while working as an assistant wrestling coach at the university in the 1980s and 90s, and several of them recently reiterated those allegations in the wake of his speakership bid.

"He doesn't deserve to be House speaker," one former wrestler told NBC News last week. "He still has to answer for what happened to us."

Jordan has long denied any wrongdoing since the allegations were first brought forward in 2018, and at no point has any former wrestler accused Jordan himself of committing sexual abuse.

The scandal has hardly been mentioned in the weekslong squabbling over who will succeed the recently-deposed Kevin McCarthy. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, a Jordan supporter, recently said she didn't know anything about the issue.

But the allegations have stuck with Jordan through the years, earning him the moniker "Gym Jordan" from detractors.

Here's all that we know about the scandal — and Jordan's alleged role in it.

Jordan worked as a wrestling coach at Ohio State

A high-school and college wrestling champion himself, Jordan  worked as an assistant coach  at Ohio State University in Columbus from 1986 to 1994, immediately after graduating from college. He earned a master's degree in education during that period and later earned a law degree in 2001.

His time as an assistant coach came to an end when he was elected to the Ohio General Assembly, and he was later elected to Congress in 2006.

A physician sexually abused members of the wrestling team while Jordan worked at the school

In April 2018, the university launched an investigation into Dr. Richard Strauss, a university physician, after the former college wrestler Mike DiSabato accused him of sexual misconduct.

That investigation found in 2019 that Strauss had sexually abused at least 177 male students — 48 of whom were on the wrestling team — while working at the school from 1978 to 1998. Those instances of abuse ranged from probing questions about students' sexual practices to overt fondling.

That same investigation found that university staff "had knowledge of Strauss' sexually abusive treatment of male student-patients as early as 1979." The university had conducted a limited investigation into Strauss' conduct in 1996, and he later voluntarily retired in 1998.

Strauss died by suicide in 2005.

Jordan was accused of turning a blind eye

In July 2018, several former wrestlers at the school came forward and accused Jordan of failing to stop the abuse, arguing that he was well aware of what was happening.

"He is absolutely lying if he says he doesn't know what was going on," DiSabato told NBC News at the time, saying that Jordan told him to "please leave me out of it" when he informed the Ohio congressman that he would be coming forward with his allegations.

"For God's sake, Strauss's locker was right next to Jordan's, and Jordan even said he'd kill him if he tried anything with him," another wrestler, Dunyasha Yetts, told the outlet, saying he had directly informed Jordan of an instance of abuse.

The Ohio congressman denied any knowledge of the incident the following day, saying he "knew of no abuse" and "if we had, we'd have reported it."

Jordan, at that point still a member of the House Freedom Caucus, also said it was "interesting that the timing is what it is in light of things that are going on in Washington," given that he was seen as a potential contender for House speaker.

Some ex-wrestlers came forward to defend Jordan in the following days, with some saying that even they were not aware of Strauss's behavior.

Speaker Paul Ryan defended Jordan, calling him a "friend of mine" who's a "man of honesty and a man of integrity."

Jordan was accused of pressuring witnesses

During a 2020 testimony before Ohio state legislators, Adam DiSabato — the brother of the first wrestler who came forward — said that Jordan had begged him to contradict his brother's claims.

"Jim Jordan called me crying, crying. Groveling. On the 4th of July, begging me to go against my brother," DiSabato said at the time. "Begging me. Crying for a half hour. That's the kind of cover-ups that's going on there."

Another former OSU wrestler, Rick Burlenski, told CNN in 2020 that Jordan called him to thank him after he told Politico that he "never had an issue" with the doctor 

"He's always been an upstanding and straightforward guy," Burlenski said of Jordan. "If there was an issue, I would have thought those guys would have handled it."

The issue receded into the background

Since the investigation, Ohio State University has paid out $60 million to victims of the abuse, though the university faces further lawsuits from former students who've alleged a cover-up.

Over time, the issue has faded into the background on Capitol. Since DiSabato's 2020 testimony, Jordan has engaged in other controversial ventures, including participating closely in former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

And several Republican lawmakers, when asked about the scandal last week, evinced general disinterest.

"Hasn't this already been dealt with?" Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida told Roll Call . "What I'm going to do right now is find a speaker of the House. I'm not getting into stuff like that from years ago."

There is a chance, however, that Jordan will be deposed as part of an ongoing lawsuit related to the sexual-abuse scandal. 

If that were to occur, it would be the first time that Jordan is required to answer questions about the scandal — and his alleged knowledge of it — while under oath.

Victim of historical sexual abuse sues Western Bulldogs for damages

The Western Bulldogs have been accused of turning a blind eye to a sexual predator, who preyed on young boys at the football club four decades ago.

Adam Kneale, now 51, is suing the club for damages after enduring abuse at the hands of Graeme Hobbs, a former club volunteer who lured young victims with the promise of money, tickets and memorabilia.

Mr Kneale's lawyers said the club, then known as Footscray, acted negligently by failing to take action to stop Hobbs and is liable for the lifelong damage Mr Kneale suffered.

Barrister Tim Hammond said Hobbs, whose nickname was Chops, was a "sick and disturbed sexual predator" who raped Mr Kneale countless times over seven years.

Mr Hammond said the abuse led Mr Kneale to develop substance addictions, and that he continued to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety that had affected his ability to work.

Mr Hammond told the Supreme Court Hobbs was an "integral part" of the footy club, whose volunteering and fundraising work was publicly recognised by club leaders.

"Hobbs was able to take advantage of his special role at the club to take advantage of boys like Adam Kneale and then abuse them," Mr Hammond said.

"Hobbs made money in his role for the Footscray Football Club but it was Adam Kneale who has paid the price for that.

"This was a football club being run by men who should have known."

Mr Hammond said Hobbs first abused Mr Kneale when he was 11-years-old in 1984, and committed further offences at the Whitten Oval club offices, change rooms, toilets, the boardroom and on a trip to Sydney.

"Hobbs was a strange oddball, an older bloke who lived with his dad and hung around with kids on the premises and gravitated to the Under 19's," Mr Hammond said.

"We say people in charge should have asked, ‘What's he doing here and why is he having such an important role at the club?'"

Mr Hammond said, Hobbs also exposed Mr Kneale to other paedophiles, who committed further rapes against him when he was a teenager.

Mr Kneale reported Hobbs to police in 1993.

The case made the front page of the local paper, The Western Times, when the rapist was jailed by the County Court.

Hobbs is now dead.

Club maintains its conduct was 'proper and appropriate'

Jack Rush KC, acting for the Footscray Football Club, said the club did not deny sexual abuse took place, but denied its former leaders were aware of Hobbs' actions, even after it was reported in the newspaper.

"It's not a straight-forward case," he told the court.

"We are dealing with something that is 40 years old. We are dealing with different times.

"[Hobbs] is responsible for the abuse. He was taken to court and charged by the police, he was sentenced to imprisonment.

"The conduct of the club at all times was proper and appropriate."

Lawyers for Footscray intend to call former Bulldogs president Peter Gordon and ex-CEO Dennis Galimberti to give evidence in the civil jury trial, before Justice Melanie Richards.

Mr Hammond said his client was seeking financial compensation for the pain suffered, lost earnings and aggravated damages to "send a message to the footy club".

Mr Kneale will be the first witness called in the trial.

Other victims of Hobbs, Mr Kneale's family members, medical experts and former journalist Derryn Hinch — who routinely reported on child sex abuse cases at the time — are among those who will give evidence for the plaintiffs.

The trial continues.

Threads ban on search terms like "COVID" is temporary, head of Instagram says

The head of Instagram on Tuesday said the app Threads will soon stop blocking search terms like "COVID" – a current practice at the app, which Meta launched in July . 

In an exchange on the Threads platform, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the app's ban on certain search words is temporary, but he doesn't know when exactly the blocks will be lifted.

Threads is Meta's newest social media platform, and it is similar to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Meta is also the parent company of Facebook, which has come under scrutiny in the past for permitting the dissemination of misinformation.

In September,  The Washington Post first reported  that explicit words, as well as words and phrases that may be seen as contentious by some, would be blocked from the search feature on Threads. The list of banned search terms includes words like "sex" and "porn" as well as "coronavirus," "long covid," "vaccines" and other related words.

Washington Post reporter Taylor Lorenz, who wrote the original report on Threads' search term bans, posted on the platform this week saying the users were "somehow 150x times more insufferable than Twitter."

That seemed to catch Mosseri's attention. Lorenz went on to tell Mosseri in a post that communications representatives for Threads told her the block on words like "covid" and "long covid" would be temporary, while representatives at Meta told her it was not. 

"I'm sympathetic to the fact that Meta gets a lot of unfair criticism around misinfo, but Covid is surging/ongoing," she wrote. 

Mosseri replied: "I don't have an ETA to give you unfortunately, but it is temporary and we are working on it. We're just getting pulled in a lot of directions at once right now," he said.

In another reply , Mosseri said that the ban on some words would be lifted in "weeks or months." He added, "The reality is that we have lots of important work to do. The team is moving fast, but we're not yet where we want to be."

Both Facebook and Twitter have come under fire for their alleged mishandling of misinformation on their platforms, particularly surrounding elections and the pandemic. 

In 2016, Twitter and Facebook were subjected to an  interference campaign  by the Russian government, which created confusion on the platforms surrounding issues related to the presidential election. The heads of both platforms have testified before Congress about the alleged allowance – and even alleged promotion – of misinformation. 

Both companies said they would make changes to their platforms to try and stop the spread of misinformation . 

Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, Twitter said it created a "2020 U.S. election hub" to promote accurate election information and resources. The company implemented stricter content policies and even banned former President Donald Trump, saying he violated the policies after the Jan. 6 insurrection and citing "the risk of further incitement of violence."

Facebook, which also deleted Trump's account for violating content policies with his posts about the Jan. 6 insurrection, said in 2020 that it had created methods to fight misinformation. 

The company said it would remove posts with "clear misinformation" about the election and coronavirus. Still, the platforms' fight against misinformation has been scrutinized. In 2021, a whistleblower who had resigned from Facebook in 2020 said executives at the company knew about the spread of misinformation on the platform but failed to act on it at times.

While Twitter, which was rebranded and restructured by Elon Musk, has long been criticized as an app where people spread misinformation and hateful content, Threads was framed as a safer alternative. In an Instagram post about the new platform, Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg called Threads a "friendly community."

Some social media users posted memes comparing the lighthearted culture of Threads to the darker reputation Twitter had earned in the eyes of some. Some users even called Threads, which gained more than 100 million users in five days , a "Twitter killer." 

In an interview with The Verge in September, Zuckerberg called Twitter "quite negative and critical." 

"I always just thought you could create a discussion experience that wasn't quite so negative or toxic," Zuckerberg said. Strictly star Adam Thomas reveals frustrating health update days before live show

Strictly Come Dancing star Adam Thomas has said he has fallen ill ahead of week 5.

The Waterloo Road actor, 35, brother of Ryan Thomas who was in the BBC ballroom show’s audience for the live show on Saturday, shared a picture of himself on Instagram in bed with his hand on his head.

Adam, who is partnered with  pro Luba Mushtuk , captioned the post: ‘Of all weeks to be poorly!’

The former Emmerdale actor has previously opened up about being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis earlier this year after experiencing months of pain – but said Strictly couldn’t come at a better time.

He wrote: ‘The reason I signed up to Strictly is because I just want to be able to move again, get fit and do it, all with a smile on my face!

‘It really couldn’t have come at a better time I’m a firm believer of everything happening for a reason, and I know the journey I’ve been on was meant to happen, to never take small things in life for granted! …Like going for a run, playing with my kids and just being able to walk with no pain!’

But it’s been no easy feat.

Adam previously told Metro.co.uk the autoimmune condition had affected his mobility and left him unable to walk at points.

He explained: ‘A couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t really walk, I couldn’t really do much.

‘So to get to this point that I’m at now, I’m just so happy. I just want to get on that dance floor, start moving, and I’m just happy to be here and to be able to do it.’

Adam added: ‘I don’t care how far I get, I’m just happy to be here.’

He also recently shared a picture of himself having a blood tes t as he opened up about the measures he was taking to keep his condition ‘under control.’

What is rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints. The condition usually affects the hands, feet and wrists.

Sometimes symptoms can ‘flare up’ and become worse, which can be difficult to predict.

With treatment it’s possible to decrease how much this happens and minimise or prevent long-term damage to the joints.

Other more general symptoms include tiredness and weight loss.

Diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis early on is important, as early treatment can help reduce the risk of joint damage.

It is an autoimmune disease, which means your immune system mistakenly attacks cells which line your joints, leading to pain, swelling and stiffness.

Over time it can affect not only joints and cartilage, but also bone.

While there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, early diagnosis and treatments can allow sufferers months or even years between flare-ups.

Medicine, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy help keep people mobile, and surgery may be required to help any joint problems that may develop.

Depending on the severity of your arthritis, people may be forced to adapt how they do every day tasks.

Complications include the potential of rheumatoid arthritis to lead to other conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, inflammation of other parts of the body (eyes, lungs, heart), and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Adam captioned the post: ‘One day I’ll get my arthritis under control…but until then, more bloods and more doctors. Staying strong.’

The NHS describes rheumatoid arthritis as a ‘long-term condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints’ with the main affected areas being the hands, feet and wrists.’

There is no cure, but early diagnosis and treatment can prevent ‘flare-ups’ from being a common occurrence. However, depending on the severity of the pain, stiffness, and swelling, sufferers might find overcoming everyday tasks more of a challenge, and have to adapt accordingly.
